Internet Research Strategies for Homeschoolers
Mondays, March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5, 12, 19, 26
10-11 a.m.
These classes are designed for homeschoolers who need to use the most current research methods, both to research and write papers for grades 6-12, and also for their college years. Topics include building internet searches using boolean phrases, finding relevant materials online and in the library and evaluating material found. Basic MLA citation method will also be practiced. A $50 fee includes all class materials and instructional materials for parents. Homework will be assigned during each class period.
The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Computers
Wednesdays, March 17 through April 21
11 a.m.-12 noon
This six-part course is designed for people who have never used a computer before. Learn the lingo, master the mouse and keyboard and familiarize yourself with the computer’s desktop – all in a friendly and patient atmosphere. Participants are expected to attend all six classes. A $40 materials fee includes your book for the class and all handouts.
Introduction to MS Word 2007
Thursday, April 1, 6:30 p.m. & Thursday, May 6, 6:30 p.m.
Participants will learn how to create, save and edit documents. Formatting of text, tabs and other tricks will also be covered. Prerequisites: basic knowledge of MS Windows, keyboard and mouse.
How to Use a Mouse and Keyboard
Thursday, April 8, 3-4:30 p.m.
This course will provide a general overview of using a PC. Little or no computer knowledge is required. Participants will learn the basic parts of a computer, as well as the proper use of basic computer functions such as: powering the computer on and off, using a mouse and keyboard, and highlighting, copying and pasting text. Prerequisites: none.
Introduction to MS Excel 2007
Thursday, April 8, 6:30 p.m. & Tuesday, May 18, 6:30 p.m.
Learn common uses for spreadsheets, Excel 2003 format, basic Excel functions and build a simple budget spreadsheet. Prerequisite: basic knowledge of MS Windows, keyboard and mouse.
Introduction to Computers, Part II
Thursday, April 15, 3-4:30 p.m.
This class will explore Windows, the computer operating system, as well as various programs. Participants will learn about the basic elements of Windows including common menus, toolbars and icons. A basic overview of Microsoft Word will provide participants with the skills to create, save and print documents, use features such as Word toolbars, and check spelling and grammar. Prerequisites: How to Use a Mouse and Keyboard course OR familiarity with using a keyboard and mouse.
Introduction to Facebook
Wednesday, April 28, 11 a.m.
Learn the basics of creating a Facebook account, setting up your profile, finding and adding friends, and figuring out what “the Wall” is all about. Students must have a valid email account. Prerequisites: basic knowledge of MS Windows and the internet.
Unleashing the Power of Google
Monday, May 17, 11 a.m.
Google is much more than a search engine, and this class will teach you how to use all the free components! Prerequisites: Knowledge of MS Windows and the internet.
Introduction to the Internet
Thursday, May 20, 3-4:30 p.m.
This class will provide participants with a variety of skills to navigate and search the World Wide Web. Topics covered will include basic web terminology, getting online by typing web addresses, identifying and using toolbar buttons on the Internet Explorer program, using search engines to find information and websites, and evaluating websites and online information. Prerequisites: Introduction to Computers course or familiarity using a keyboard and mouse.
Introduction to Email
Thursday, May 27, 3-4:30 p.m.
This class will teach participants how to use a Yahoo email account. Learn to compose and send email messages, attach files to email messages, read and reply to incoming emails and store email addresses in a personal address book. All participants must have a free Yahoo email account set up prior to attending class. If you need help setting up a Yahoo email address, please visit the circulation desk for assistance. Prerequisites: Introduction to Computers course and Introduction to the Internet OR familiarity using a mouse and keyboard as well as getting online and entering web addresses.
